Fatal Gulf Freeway Crash Claims Life of 5-Year-Old Girl; Driver Charged

A tragic crash along Interstate 45 in Houston has resulted in the death of a 5-year-old girl and the arrest of a 60-year-old man now facing serious criminal charges.

 Crash Details

The collision occurred in April 2026 in the 16700 block of I-45 South near FM 2351 along the Gulf Freeway. Authorities say the driver, Daniel Ruiz, was operating his vehicle in an unsafe manner when he rear-ended another car.

Inside Ruiz’s vehicle was a young child seated in the front passenger seat. Investigators confirmed that the child was not secured in a proper safety seat at the time of the crash. She was transported to a nearby hospital, where she later died from her injuries.

No other injuries were reported in the incident.

 Charges and Legal Status

Daniel Ruiz has been charged with manslaughter, a second-degree felony under Texas law. He is currently being held without bond.

Officials have also indicated that a probation revocation is likely, given Ruiz’s prior criminal case.

 Prior Incident

In December 2024, Ruiz was charged with child abandonment after leaving a 4-year-old child unattended for more than four hours at Sam Houston Race Park while gambling. He later received four years of deferred probation in that case.
